I went to school before the digital age arrived and didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I left. This was largely due to the fact that I wasn’t really aware of what opportunities were out there.
Nowadays, the internet allows you to research any particular field of interest you may have. You can find recruitment sites that will inform you what jobs are available and what kind of qualifications and experience you may need.
You can read case studies from mentors or watch their videos to show you how best to crack any particular industry.
This has made young people more aspirational and focused on finding a career they really enjoy rather than just settling for a steady safe job that they’re familiar with.
Schools too have embraced this shift in demand by offering more choices in subjects you can study, especially in fields such as the arts.
So if you studied drama or music at school and want to continue with it as your main profession let’s look at the best way to go about it.
If you do want to become an entertainer let’s start with a note of realism. You may be determined and talented but that alone may not be enough to succeed. You just have to watch the thousands of hopefuls that sign up to perform on TV talent shows but never even make the auditions.
So have an ambition, have a dream but don’t put all your eggs into one basket. Yes, you could study drama or music at university but consider learning a new skill in another trade or doing a degree in a different subject where the demand is high and job prospects are more predictable. This doesn’t mean abandoning your dream. This is just your backup plan that should help finance your entertainment ambitions.
You could join an amateur dramatic society or a music club while you study or employ your new trade. Most universities provide these types of facilities. This should open up opportunities in your desired profession and allow you the time to give it your best shot.
To achieve anything in life you normally need a few helping hands along the way. Like acts of kindness, finance, opportunities and mentoring.
If you’re one of the lucky ones and do achieve your goals remember those people who helped you. Try and give something back to assist those trying to follow in your shoes as much as possible. Whether financial help or giving your time to provide mentoring. Perhaps also do what you can for anyone who needs help in your local community. Giving back can be hugely satisfying when you see its positive effects. It may also bring more opportunities for yourself so it really is a win-win.
Many successful business people have recognised the value of giving back. One good example is that of David Bolno.
David Bolno is a respected entertainment industry executive and business manager in the United States who has worked with several successful performers in the music, film, and TV industries. He also works with songwriters, producers and other professionals in the entertainment world.
The list of top artists he has worked with includes Justin Bieber, Drake, Post Malone, Pharrell Williams and Will.i.am.
Drake was especially complimentary of what David had done for him. He thanked him for “pulling my life together for me and putting me in a position where I can now begin to build my empire.” This message was printed in the liner notes of Drake’s Take Care album of 2011.
To know why David Bolno places an emphasis on helping others you need to understand his philosophy in life.
Bolno is a well-educated man, with a law degree. He realised that many up-and-coming entertainers were not so fortunate and didn’t seem to value the benefits of a good education which could often lead to poor business decisions. He encourages and provides educational opportunities.
He is a man who cares about those less fortunate than himself and believes in the value of forming strong relationships starting at home and in the wider community. He suggests everyone should try and help others in some way no matter how small the gesture may be. Kindness encourages more kindness and that can lead to positive changes.
David Bolno values giving back as he has learned it is hugely personally satisfying particularly when your donation or mentoring has changed someone’s life for the better. His generosity has also led to more business opportunities and has benefitted when they have been successful too.
So I wish you the best of luck with chasing your chosen dream. If you achieve success remember those who helped you along your journey and try to give something back to those who need it.
